Movies

Joey recommended me to watch Kungfu Panda which was set to start Summer vacation here in Japan, so that there are more kids to watch. Most animation movies are shown in 3 main time. Summer which is endof July til August. New Year Break (December) and Spring Break (March) For example, doraemon, keroro gunso and crayon shinchan is always on March, disney movies and detective conan , bleach on december and naruto, pokemon , all the power ranger movies on July-August.
It's been a habit to watch the naruto movie ever since the 2nd movie for me with Elaine. And recently I've been enjoying watching friday nights too. Haven't watched Naruto yet (read: got lazy last weekend) but Keiko and I went on an animation marathon last week. Wednesday was ladies day and Friday was Movie Lover's Day so cinema was only 10 bucks, believe me thats the cheapest one here. I have one free movie so maybe ill use it on sat to watch naruto early.
Anyway, Keichan and I watched Kungfu Panda at Cinema Sunshine wednesday. There wasn't as much people as I expected considering it was 830 showing. The movie was so funny and I wasnt the only one laughing. A lot of times when you're watching in subtitled Japanese, the punchlines are at different times so I(and other people who understand the english)  end up laughing at different intervals with the Japanese audience. This acupuncture scene killed me ! I couldn't stop laughing!! The cgi was so pretty too. Loved Loved the movie!!!
Gake no Ue no Ponyo is the latest Ghibli movie and was directed by Hayao Miyazaki. After seeing the commercial, i didn't really know what to expect from the movie. It kind of ran like The Little Mermaid but with different twists. If you don't think about it too deeply, the story is pretty simple but if you do, there's so much depth to it! Sousuke and Ponyo was just soooooo cute!! I want a ponyo keychain now :)
Next up Naruto!

TTCOHTM Moment

  • Jul. 28th, 2008 at 5:55 PM
You know when you get  into situations and you think that "These things can only happen to me!" Well I encounter those from time to time. On a normal day, I don' t see myself as a lucky person. By lucky, I mean the winning the door prize in a raffle kind of lucky. I do believe I am lucky in family, friends and work, the stuff that really matter But for those everyday, something good will happen today kind of luck. I need to fill up my meter before I even get smidgen.
ANYWAY ... last saturday, I had a break between schedule so I decided to get my one-week old new bike at toshimaen from nerima so i can take my bike and inflate my tires. So walking back to from Nerima, I decided to go home and eat lunch too so on the way I decided to buy ice cream from this shop I always pass by on the weekends. So loaded with melting in the sun goodies I walked back to toshimaen retrieved my bicycle and went home. On the way home I decided that putting air wouldnt take a few minutes so what's a few minutes difference right. BIG mistake. SO there I was putting in the 50 cents to the machine and pumping air to the tires and when I deemed it full, closed the cap took the handles and prepared to ride home. I took one step and prepared to pedal away when bam I mean literal *BOOM* my tire explodes! not the whole thing but I blew out a wheel!! Right there in front of the bike shop!! With my ice cream melting in the basket!!! Argh I ended up getting a new tire rubber (there went my movie money ). This does not bode well for my new bicycle. sigh SO how was your weekend?
In other news, movies this month are a smogasbord! So many movies to watch!! Joey recommended Kung Fu Panda so Keiko and I are watchign on Wed and also on Friday we're going to watch the new Ghibli movie " Ponyo in a Cliff" by the master Hayao Miyazaki. On saturday the new Naruto movie starts too!! I have free ticket so might watch it Saturday prime time :)  Then the following week, the Dark Knight starts! plus Hancock and The Incredible Hulk too!!! SOo many movies to watch. Iron man does not start till September though.
Rookies just finished and although it was different from the manga in some parts it was still really cool!! They did a pretty good job so now I'm entertaining the thoughts whether they would dream of doing Slam Dunk. If they do though, they better do a damn fine job. I wonder if Inoue Takehiko will allow it. And at the end of the 2 hour finale they announced that there will be a special this autumn and a movie next year!! Woot More Rookies. And with that ending, we who have read the manga all know who that guy is heheheh The movie is rumored to be an original story about their last year in high school . They are talking with manga write Morita Masanori now about the story.  *waku waku*  More Shinjo-kun!

Indiana Jones

  • Jul. 2nd, 2008 at 2:57 PM
Watched the latest installment of Indiana Jones last Friday. From all the negative hype in imdb, it wasn't as bad as I thought. The whole Indie Jones/ X-Files fusion was pretty weird I admit but as most action movies though it's no-brainer for me. People usually complain about the story but it seemed like a typical action movie for me. Maybe that's what's wrong with it, it was typical ie forgettable. I preferred Prince Caspian over it.

  • Jul. 15th, 2007 at 11:13 PM
It's midnyt and i'm on my way home from watching Harry Potter movie 5. I can't wait for the 7th book! this weekend was the advance screening so we had to pay full price but it was worth it! Wish i could have seen more of Fred and George cuz i remember they made book 5 good for me.The person who played Umbridge did her well cuz i really hated her! i also liked Helena Bonheim Carter as Bellatrix and Tonks with the purple hair.Luna's voice was so whimsical. Some parts you won't get unless you read the book like the prophesy etc.All in all (^-^)/ pretty good

Spartans!!!!!!

  • Jun. 11th, 2007 at 11:42 AM
My friend Akiko and I watched 300 last Saturday! and OMG!!! I loved it!!!!! Honestly, I didn't really except to like it because of all the violence that I heard was in the movie, but I really wanted to watch it because of historical setting. There hasn't been that much movies dated during that era. Based on the infamouse Battle of Thermopylae of 480 BC, the movie tells of the battle of the allied Greek city-states against the massive Persian army, specifically these 300 Spartan soldiers'(and 700 Thespian volunteers) who made their last stand at the Pass. I liked how the movie was made, it felt like the violence had meaning not like some other movie ie Kill Bill where it was senseless. There was a kind of surrealness to the film that made it feel like an art film to me. All in all, much more appreciated than Pirates of the Carribean 3.
Which brings me to another point, 300 was shown on the cinema last saturday and we went to the 645 screening in out local cinema, we arrived late so we couldn't catch the trailers but still we got good seats, all in all there were only around 50 or so people in the cinema I think. Why!!! People 300 is soooo good!! hehe Here in japan, because of the influx of may movies, not only mainly US ones like back home, but from Korea, France etc as well as almost bimonthly Japanese movies, it is ot wonder that a movie can be disregarded by the masses. One of the reasons that movies take awhile here is not only do they have to wait for the translation but they also have to build up the hype so people would watch the movie, which they didn't do enough of in this one , siiiggghhh too bad.

みんな!絶対300を見逃さないで!映画に見ないと意味ない!!!最高だよ!!!

After the movie, Akiko and I went to eat in the Israel restaurant in Ekoda along the Seibu Ikebukuro line, I've been there before but it was the first time for Akiko so we ordered the eat-all-you-can special where you can ask for mroe per plate. Here's a picture

Aside from that there was soup, and rice platter with kebab, pork and chicken. The food here is always so good and is supposedly authentic. I especially love the hamburger like patty (top left) and the chicken kebab with spice. the middle one is kind of like a paste. So what you do is you get a bread (right) and combine the ingredients anyway you like and enjoy!!!

Don't tell me they're making a movie of His Dark Materials!!!!!!" So i mosey along to the site and lo and behold!!! They're making a movie about HIs Dark Materials by Philip Pullman!!! Yay. The Golden Compass is going to be shown on December this year!!! Only downside is it will probably be shown in Japan late Februaury or March huhuhu. Blood Diamond

  • Apr. 16th, 2007 at 11:28 AM

My friend and I watched Blood Diamond last weekend and it was pretty good!  This is a pretty heavy film which reminds me of Hotel Rwanda. If you liked Hotel Rwanda (although that one is better) you would like this one too.

Basic guise is that Djimon Hounsou , who was really good in this movie that I was surprised he didn't get an Oscar , was a simple fisherman who was kidnapped by the militant group the RUF to work in the diamond minds. Leonardo DeCaprio,a Rhodesian part mercenary and arms dealer working  part diamond smuggler who hears that Solomon(Djimon) has found a 100 carat pink diamond. So in exchange for rescuing his family, they will share 50-50. The only problem now is getting the diamond without getting killed. Set in the civil war of the 90's in Sierra Leone, this film gives a new meaning to "How much does your wedding ring cost?"

"Blood Diamond" brings attention to the dark side of the precious gem industry, where brutal warlords draft young boys into militias and make them killing machines while their parents are enslaved and put to work as diamond miners. -- from Foxnew.com

"The story drives the film, but for me it's not what's important, for me it's the background scenes of torture and violence ----of children being armed with AK47s and taught to kill in order to gain respect.. of Africans being maimed in order to prevent them voting (where it's a case of no hand, no vote!)... innocent people caught in the crossfire between rebel and government soldiers, where the only winners are those that supply the guns and ammo!! " --grimwold.org.uk

It feels weird though that the film wasn't really filmed in Sierra Leone. The image of these child soldiers although not those in your face preachy scenes were pretty powerful.

Philippine cinema

"Philippine Movie Industry "Now Clinically Dead," Says Director

The Filipino film industry which only recently turned out more than 200 films a year, will produce only about 25 in 2006 and faces extinction without government support, a top director said Saturday. As reported by the Philippine Star, director Joel Lamangan told a forum in Quezon City, "The movie industry is now clinically dead." He warned that unless film producers receive government backing, foreigners will eventually produce movies depicting Filipinos, and "the country will lose its soul." He demonstrated the lack of government support by noting that at international film festivals in which Filipino films compete, producers have to pay for the meals of Philippine embassy officials in attendance."
quoted from imdb.com

If this really happens that's just sad 25 movies for the whole year would mean at most only two-three movies per month. And Philippine directed movies have been improving since my last film, it's just a shame if this does happen

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

  • Oct. 9th, 2005 at 12:37 AM
Growing up with Roald Dahl books. I've been looking forward to watching Charlie and the chocolate factory and I must admit I really liked it!. Ive been getting mixed reviews from my friends since I heard that it was soso or they didn't like it but Mika and I planned to watch it already and I was looking forward to eat nevertheless. It's so funny!!! Johnny Depp played wachky Willy Wonka and the OOmpa Loompas!!! I laughed so hard at the Willy WOnka introduction song haha!! I still buy slapstick humor and it just struck me as funny everytime Willy smacked ran smackdab into the glass elevator ahhh brings back memories ( evil laugh)
On a side note, watched F4 also. was better but the end disappointed me. I was like that's all? hehe
On to the next movie!

Batman Begins!

  • Jul. 1st, 2005 at 10:34 PM
Haven't been watching movies recently so to make up for it, after WoW yesterday, I watched Batman Begins today too!! Everyone's been telling me that Batman Begins is good so my friend, Satoko and me went to the movies today. As to not put any spoilers here, I'll just put it my opinion of the movie. I wasn't really planning on watching this actually but when I watched the trailer, it looked pretty interesting (nabenta sa akin!) hehe and I wasn't disappointed. Definitely better than WoW!
The weapons were cool. The story had essence in it so it did make me happy. Christian Bale's Batman voice kinda made sense, The confrontation in the end before Gary Oldman talks to him(I love Gary Oldman here btw), I found kinda lacking though, but I guess they need it to follow the plot hehe. The introduction of the villain at the end was cool imo though.
I tried looking for the Japan poster and only succeeded in getting this itty bitty one if you look really closely and squint you can make out Tokyo Tower and Roppongi Hills heheImage hosted by Photobucket.com

On another note, in the trailers, Peter Jackson introduced his new movie King Kong. And I have to admit the trailer looked promising. hehe What would you do if you were standing in the middle of a T-rex and a giant Ape... hmmmm

- I don't know where I am right now, I'm somewhere undefined

War of the Worlds

  • Jul. 1st, 2005 at 1:43 AM
Just got back from watching War of the Worlds with [info]unlightedcandle. There's nothing like biking in the middle of the night.
Anyway as for the movie,  the acting was pretty good. I so love Dakota Fanning!! but there's just something about the story that  kinda disappointed me.Maybe it's the ending hmmm It's too bad though the effects were pretty good but they should really have improved the script. Although on the plus side, it made me want to read the book.
